BYOD is a truly a global phenomenon with 9 out of10 of IT departments enabling some form of BYOD.  According to Gartner, half of companies will require BYOD by 2017. Despite these staggering numbers, BYOD is still a topic that is very polarizing for many organizations.  I wanted to spend some time reviewing the benefits and challenges of BYOD as well as provide some good next steps for organizations still in the process of their BYOD journey.  Some of the benefits of BYOD include:

Over the past several years, there has been some good news for network administrators as the tools they use have transitioned from reactionary to proactive. Gone are the times when tools were only utilized to troubleshoot issues after a user reported it. Today’s tools have evolved to provide methods for IT staff to be able to detect issues as soon as they happen or to predict an issue before it impacts users. Not only has the technology we deliver to end users increased, but our ability to support it has as well.

Recently a local school system was looking for a way to introduce new technology into their massive transportation fleet in order to improve the service and security for students and drivers.  The school system covered a large geographic area, making the commute for many students quite lengthy.

Students are digital natives that want to keep learning. But they are no longer limited to traditional text books, pencil and paper or in-classroom studies.  Virtual schools are here and they are demanding real-time, active learning, and opportunity to connect students to the rest of the world, not just their local classrooms.  As a matter of fact, it’s projected that by 2019, half of all high school classes will be conducted online.

Research shows that the bring your own device (BYOD) movement has reached a critical point: a range of studies show that more than half of companies surveyed allow employees to use personally owned devices to access the corporate network.

Over the past decade, the smartphone alone has introduced an exponential extension to how people connect with other people. More recently though, we’ve seen smartphone development focus less on new features and more on improving performance and presentation of existing features. The current exponential wave of innovation is already underway, and it’s called the Internet of Things (IoT). An example of IoT in use today is a physician having the ability to collaborate with patients over instant video.

We sat down with our own Raphael Meyerowitz, AVP Data Center Technical Services during EMC World 2014 this week in Las Vegas to get his thoughts on application integration, security and client opportunities. Q: What is Presidio’s background with EMC and Microsoft?

Sometimes I wonder how an economic powerhouse like the United States of America can shut down for two weeks because of politics at the expense of the services given to the citizens?  Sure, the media picks up on it and it rides the news cycle for a little while, but, everyone knows that it won’t last and at some point everyone will go back to work once the political leverage has been exercised.  In January, both the House and Senate passed a bill that will fund the government at least until the end of the fiscal year 2014.

When I began my career in technology in 1999, companies were establishing their web presence.  I was in sales back then and the number of servers bought to support websites was staggering.  If you were in the industry at that time, I’m sure you remember.  If your company wasn’t on the web, it was on the road to the web.  If you had just a smidgen of HTML programming experience, you suddenly found yourself as the web administrator.

During Partner Summit this past week, I had the opportunity to sit in on the Cisco session called “Monetizing the New Security Model” and I thought was really well done. A lot of the areas discussed were items that I discuss with customers on a regular basis. Our customers face increasing security challenges due to a number of factors including: the complexity of their networks, better equipped attackers and a larger attack surface due to the transition to mobile, cloud and virtual infrastructures.

In the simplest terms, public cloud is attractive because of convenience, the ability to acquire IT resources on demand and pay as you use them in a utility fashion. This is why many organizations are finding departments circumventing their own IT to get these services from public cloud providers. Although convenient, this introduces new issues like security, ownership of data and compliance to regulations.

The Challenge Most datacenters are designed in an active/passive configuration. The passive datacenter is used in “what-if” situations and are strictly deployed for disaster recovery scenarios. A lot of resources are consumed for datacenters to be used only for the “what-if” scenarios. The Presidio solution described herein offers an intelligent datacenter solution that brings a true active/active structure to utilize two or more datacenters equally.

I spent almost three years preparing to accomplish a huge milestone in my career—becoming CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) in Collaboration certified—but it was well worth the effort! Keeping up-to-date with what’s new in collaboration is difficult because the technology changes very fast and continues to grow at a fast pace. It parellels my job because that’s exactly what we strive to do here at Presidio. We strive to meet the needs of mobile workers with high-def video, gadgets and new technologies that integrate with their mobile devices and increase their productivity.
