Understanding the Business Technology Life Cycle

The process of selecting, acquiring, using, and ultimately replacing business technology is increasingly complex, asking much of the organization’s IT resources. Solution selection requires a detailed knowledge of a dizzying array of competing products and services; procurement takes equal parts logistics coordinator and financial analyst; implementation and maintenance demand an increasingly diverse set of deep technical skills; and equipment disposal must meet toxic waste and other regulatory standards for every level of government. Even the largest, most experienced corporate IT departments are hard-pressed to satisfy so diverse a skill set.

Presidio Technology Capital has developed the Business Technology Life Cycle as a tool for discussing this vital process and analyzing each customer’s unique needs. Most companies can do many of the required tasks, few can do them all, and almost none can do them all well and cost-effectively. The Business Technology Life Cycle helps us work with clients to determine which tasks they can do well, which they want to do, which they want help with, and which they want to outsource entirely. Presidio Technology Capital provides financial solutions to assist in acquisition and updating, and partners with industry-leading solution providers Presidio Networked Solutions and Atlantix Global Systems to help with the other tasks most often requiring assistance — and to do the necessary work well.

The Business Technology Life Cycle can be approached in various ways. At the highest level the process is a three-step progression: Decision, Action, Results. Determine what needs to be done; do it; and enjoy the benefits. This level is shown in the hub of the cycle diagram. A more granular examination shows four distinct segments, each of which may be found to have elements of decision, action, and results in various proportions. These four segments are Discover, Acquire, Implement, and Maintain. Although the details of each segment vary widely with the nature and scope of any particular effort, there are certain tasks which are universal (or nearly so) within each segment. These tasks are identified in the Business Technology Life Cycle because they each require specialized skills or knowledge, or impose unusual demands on organizational resources, or pose particular risks. By considering each segment and each task in turn, the organization is able to identify the tasks with which they will want help, the resources they will need to access, and the risks they wish to avoid or offload.

This diagram of the Business Technology Life Cycle is provided as an aid to exploring the overall process of selecting, acquiring, managing, and replacing IT and telecommunication assets.
